Monthly wrap up: April 2019

I’ve made it through the first month!

I can sugar coat everything and say it was all a cake walk and that each day I was living the expat dream, but we both know that’s a bold face lie.

I missed major events back home; anniversaries, going away parties, birthdays, and baby showers. My immune system and sense of direction is challenged (strengthened?) daily. But aside from all the challenges and germs, I’m still here. That’s something you all have been so kind as to point out. That I’m still here and haven’t jumped ship yet; I survived, my kids haven’t eaten any crayons, and I’ve even made a few friends with my co-teachers. So based on those alone, things are a solid okay.

I want to share a few of my favorite moments from April with you all, moments that sum up this first month:

The night I left. It was a 1 am flight and Dulles was a ghost town. I cried the entire length of this underground passage way. Fear of the unknown stretching out in front of me as I left the familiar behind.
Walking in to my new school that first day and being told, okay, this is your classroom! (Still working on finding the time to decorate it)
Learning how to cook in a closet sized kitchen. The limited counter space is one thing, but not having an oven makes me sad. I’ll have to get creative in how I make cookies when I begin experimenting!
Buying a daikon radish the size of my arm for about $0.75
Having a hanami, a cherry blossom viewing picnic, with new co-teachers and friends in a local park. It was sunny and there was plenty of food and laughs!
Finding little pieces of familiarity in the stores always makes me smile.
Sleeping on this for the first month.
To now sleeping in an actual bed not on the floor! Same comforter, different vibe. Feels like a brand new room.
Being “forced” to go out and get ramen with a coworker. We both finished late English lessons and needed to celebrate the start of Golden Week. Absolutely hit the spot on a chilly evening!

One month down. I want to thank each and every one of you who have taken time out of your busy schedules to read my little internet diary. It means so much and I really appreciate it!

I also want to thank those of you who continuously encourage me and talk me down off the ledge every other day. Your kind words have helped more than you probably realize. I have felt so loved this first month and it has truly been a humbling experience. Thank you all.

I’m still taking it one day at a time (mainly because I haven’t found a way to skip Mondays yet), but I have a feeling that before long, I’ll be saying “wow, where’d the year go?” After all this, I’m looking forward to what May has to offer. Hopefully some warmer weather, new adventures, and even more food!
